Wire

Use of copper is more or less universal for speaker wire and signal cables, it has low resistance and less cost compared to other suitable materials. Copper and aluminum both oxidize, but oxides of copper are conductive, while those of aluminum are capacitative and insulating.

Silver has a slightly lower resistivity than copper, which allows a thinner wire to have the same resistance. Silver is expensive, so a copper wire with the same resistance costs considerably less. Like copper, silver is also subject to oxidation.

Gold has a higher resistivity than either copper or silver, but it does not oxidize, so it can be used for wire-end terminations. Suitably specified gold flashing has its uses for appropriate tasks, but in domestic use such flashing is not normally functional, for several reasons.

Guage

AWG which stands for American Wire Gauge Standard which is a standardized wiring system used in the United States to determine the thickness and capabilities of wire. This term is important to pay attention to since some brands of wire ignore this system. For instance if a manufacturer does not use the AWG system then it is possible that wire with a “4 gauge” jacket only has 8 gauge of actual wire inside. The common sizes of wire found in car audio for amplifiers are 3/0, 1/0, 2, 4 and 8 gauge, these are considered power wire and are single conductor (either positive or negative, but not both). For subwoofers and speakers you will find dual conductor (carries and positive and negative polarity) in the following sizes 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 22 gauges. There are many other ratings however these are the most common sizes you will see in car stereo applications.

Wire gauge is a measurements of how large a wire is, either in diameter or cross sectional area. This determines the amount of electric current a wire can safely carry, as well as its electrical resistance and weight per unit of length. Wire gauge is applicable to both electrical and non-electrical wires, being important to electrical wiring and to structural cable.


Strand Count

This number will specify how many individual stands are braided together to create a single conductor. There are several advantages to individual stands over a single solid wire. The first is flexibility, it is much easier to install multiple strand wire since it can be bent and curved in any desired shape, whereas solid wire is almost impossible to bend at any angle. The second advantage is durability. Since there are many multiple strands even if a single strand were to break there is almost no loss in power transmission. In solid wire if a single strand is damaged power handling can be greatly reduced.

Oxygen Free

OFC cables which stands for oxygen free copper. This kind of audio cable is usually of a reasonable guage and the insulation is so good its oxygen free. These types of audio cables are highly recommended for most audio enthusiasts. One material that is much more conductive than traditional copper is silver, while much more expensive silver audio cables would produce a much higher conductivity resulting in a better quality sound. Oxygen free copper is classified as any copper that has its oxygen levels lowered to anything below 0.001 percent.

Speaker Wire

Speaker wire is used to make the electrical connection between loudspeakers and amplifiers. Modern speaker wire consists of two or more electrical conductor individually insulated by plastic such as PVC, PE or Teflon. The two wires are electrically identical, but are marked (e.g. by a ridge on the insulation of one wire, the color of one wire, a thread in one wire, etc) to help easily identify the correct polarity.Speaker wire, like any other linear electrical component, has three properties which determine its performance: resistance, capacitance, and inductance. A theoretically perfect wire has no resistance, capacitance, or inductance. The shorter a wire, the closer it comes to this, because resistance decreases with the length of the conductor (except superconductors). The wire's resistance has the greatest effect on its performance.
